Bullet removed from Lamia’s leg after 60hrs
Lamia Akhter, the sixth grader of Khulna city who got hit by a stray bullet on Friday, underwent successful surgery on her leg yesterday at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
Dr Mehdi Newaz, head of KMCH's orthopedic department, told The Daily Star, "The surgery was quite complicated as the bullet went into Lamia's bone. It took an hour and a half of surgery to get it out."
Lamia's mother Reshma Mollah told The Daily Star, "Lamia has been in excruciating pain since the shooting. When doctors said they cannot operate before Monday, we thought it would be too late."
"Right now, we're just hoping that my daughter recovers soon," she added.
CONTROVERSY ARISES OVER DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT
Lamia got hit by the bullet when Sheikh Yusuf Ali, a contractor living in Mistripara under Khulna Sadar, was allegedly intruded on by four alleged extortionists.
At one point in the altercation, Yusuf fired shots from his licensed pistol, and one of the bullets hit Lamia.
On Saturday, Yusuf Ali filed a case with Khulna Sadar Police Station against four youths, alleging they wanted to extort him..
On Sunday, police arrested the four in connection with the case, following identification through video footage.
The arrestees are Mohammad Abu Sayeed (22), Ismail Mallick (26), Mehedi Hasan (21), and Saiful Islam (23). They are all third-year students at the zoology department of Khulna Government Adarsha College.
They have been sent to jail, said Ashraful Alam, officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station.
"We have prayed for five-day remands for each. We will investigate the incident further," the official added.
According to the case statement, the four came to Yusuf's house and demanded Tk five lakh over a contract work. "They threatened to kill me if I didn't pay," Yusuf said in the case statement.
However, relatives of the youths said the altercation and subsequent shooting did not take place over extortion, but due to a romantic complication involving Yusuf's daughter.
Asked about this, the OC said they are considering the matter in their investigation.
Md Sohel, maternal uncle of accused Saiful Islam, alleged that Yusuf provided false information in the case statement to conceal the real issue, which is a love affair between one of the arrestees and Yusuf's daughter.
However, Yusuf Ali denied the allegations and termed them baseless.
