BGB’s role key in protecting sovereignty: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to put a stop to trespassing, drugs and goods smuggling, and human trafficking by performing their duties properly.
Addressing the parade of BGB Day 2019 at its headquarters in the city, Sheikh Hasina appreciated BGB, saying the force stands by people during any crisis like natural disasters and even the recent Rohingya crisis, alongside protecting the Bangladesh border.
On modernising BGB, the PM said, “We’ve adopted Border Guard Bangladesh Vision 2041.”
She said the government started the construction of 317-kilometre borderline ring road in three hilly districts -- Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban, for intensifying security on the border and improving the socioeconomic condition of people in remote areas.
Sheikh Hasina said some 442km out of the country’s 539km unprotected border with India and Myanmar have already been brought under surveillance through the creation of new battalions.
She said the government has taken plan to install smart digital surveillance and tactical response system in 328km border on priority basis.
The premier recalled with respect the BGB members who lost their lives in the 2009 mutiny.
“Though it was renamed, the role of BGB is immense in protecting the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh, particularly our borders,” she said.
On her arrival at BGB headquarters, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and BGB Director General Maj Gen Md Shafeenul Islam welcomed her.
The PM also handed the BGB Medal, President Border Guard Medal and BGB Medal-Service to a number of officers.
