Rape Case : BCL leader among two held in capital
Police arrested two persons including a Chhatra League leader after a woman filed a case against them with Mirpur Police Station on charges of rape and abetting it.
The arrestees are: Sabuz Al Sahba, vice-president of Dhaka (north) city unit of BCL, and his associate Fatema alias Jhumur. They were arrested after the 22-year-old filed the case on Wednesday night, said Sub-inspector Ruksana Akter.
She was sent to one-stop crisis centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early yesterday for tests, said Ruksana, also the case's investigation officer.
The complainant alleged that she was employed as a house help at Fatema's Cumilla residence couple of days ago. On September 29, Fatema took her to Sabuz's Dhaka residence where he raped her, the police official said quoting the case statement.
Sabuz met Fatema through social media, she added.
Sabuz was supposed to give Tk 10,000 to Fatema. As they were arguing over the money, the girl somehow escaped and later rushed to Mirpur Police Station.
Police arrested Fatema as she followed the victim to the police station. Later, they arrested Sabuz from Paschim Monipuripara early yesterday.
Sayedur Rahman Redoy, general secretary of Dhaka City North Unit BCL said they came to know that vice-president Sabuj was arrested in a rape case. "We will write to the central committee, recommending actions against him after going through the allegations," he said.
In a Facebook post before his arrest, Sabuz mentioned that he is the VP of Dhaka north city unit of BCL and claimed that a vested quarter was trying to frame him in various ways to take political revenge.
Though this paper could not independently verify that the Facebook ID "Sabuz Al Sahba" in Bangla belongs to the accused, several BCL activists said it was his Facebook ID. He was seen with top BCL leaders participating in party programmes in the Facebook ID.
Mentionable, in another post four days ago, two days after a woman was gang-raped allegedly by BCL men inside Syhlet MC College, Sabuz wrote: "Honourable IGP, what is the problem if the rapists are put on crossfire?"
