Andrew Kishore laid to eternal rest
Hundreds of music lovers bade farewell to playback singer Andrew Kishore, as he was laid to eternal rest at Rajshahi City Church's cemetery yesterday.
His funeral took place at the church, and later, Kishore's coffin was kept at a floral stage at the premises, where people placed wreaths to pay homage to their favourite singer. From his funeral to burial, Kishore's songs were played on loudspeakers. Many present there joined in to sing, while some broke into tears.
A last wish of Kishore was to keep his body at Rajshahi University's Central Shaheed Minar and Rajshahi Government College premises for his fans.
But due to the pandemic, this was not possible, as authorities of the institutions expressed their inability to ensure proper health rules during the possible gathering.
Kishore's body was taken to the church in a coffin at 9am, where his funeral continued for one hour. At 10am, his coffin, which was covered in a transparent glass, was placed at the floral stage, which Kishore's wife, son and daughters had decorated.
Apart from family members, musical artists who went to Rajshahi from across the country paid their homage.
Among others, Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Rajshahi lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha, lyricist Ethun Babu and Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association General Secretary Zayed Khan were present in the ceremonies.
At 11:30am, Kishore's body was taken to the graveyard and buried in a solemn manner. He was buried at a place where he had wished before his death. Kishore's parents and a brother were also buried in the cemetery.
After his burial, mayor Liton and lawmaker Badsha said they would take joint initiatives to preserve Kishore's memories. They said, initially they would support a plan to establish a music school in the city and name it after Kishore.
Noted musician Ethun Babu said, "We have lost a precious treasure through his death. I doubt if we'll get another Andrew Kishore in the next thousand years."
Eminent cricketer Khaled Masud Pilot said, "Andrew Kishore was a legend and pride for Rajshahi dwellers. We should preserve his legacy."
Zayed Khan said Kishore has created many singers and popularised many heroes through his songs. "He prevailed in the playback scene for a long time...Our true homage to Andrew Kishore would be when we can keep his memories alive and continue to learn from them."
