92 jailed during drive to protect jatka in Barishal
A total of 92 fishermen were jailed for different terms for netting jatka and other fishes illegally in Barishal region as a joint operation ended on February 1.
To save jatka (hilsa less than nine inches in length) and other fishes in coastal areas, the Department of Fisheries, naval police, coastguards and police started the operation on January 10, according to the department.
Around 294 mobile courts conducted 761 drives in six districts of Barishal division for 15 days sporadically, said officials.
A total of 1,243 behundi nets, 68.09 lakh metres of current nets, 22.707 tonnes of jatka, 1 tonne of other fishes and 2,535 fishing materials were seized during the drives, they said, adding that 131 cases were filed.
Abdul Mannan, deputy assistant director of Divisional Fisheries Office in Barishal, said behundi, current, mosquito, charghera and khota are different locally-made nets used for catching fish in large numbers. The government has banned all these to save the country's fish, he said.
Anisur Rahman Talukder, deputy director at the fisheries office, said protection of other fishes is also a part of the drive.
