2 die in Dhaka road accidents
Two persons were killed in separate road accidents in Dhaka's Jatrabari and Khilkhet areas early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Prasenjit Kumar (25), a toll collector at Postogola Bridge, and Ashique Abdullah Helal (42), a staffer at a private security company.
Prasenjit was hanging from the window of a Dhaka-bound covered-van from Mawa to collect toll at Postogola Bridge around 3am.
An altercation took place between him and the driver and the driver sped up to Jatrabari with Prasenjit still hanging from the window, said Sub-inspector Avijit Podder of Jatrabari Police Station, quoting the deceased's colleagues.
At one stage, Prasenjit got hit by a roadside concrete block. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the SI said.
The driver fled the scene.
Prasenjit's colleague Arman Hossain said, "The covered-van driver killed him. It was not an accident, it was murder," he said.
Meanwhile, SI Shamimul Islam of Khilkhet Police Station said another victim, Helal, was talking to his colleague, sitting on his motorcycle near 300 feet area around 5am when a truck hit him, leaving him dead on the spot.
Hailing from Barishal, Helal was in-charge of the security company on that site.
In Jashore, an UP member was killed when his motorcycle hit a tree at Manirampur upazila yesterday morning, reports our Benapole correspondent.
The deceased, Shariful Islam (62), is also president of Awami League in ward-5 of Shyampur Union Parishad.
His son Abdur Rahman (28) was seriously injured in the accident, said police. Rahman has been admitted to a hospital.
