14 vehicles vandalised at DEPZ

Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) workers set fire to and vandalised several vehicles yesterday, protesting death of a worker by road accident inside the intuition.

Sources said workers became agitated around 7:30pm inside DEPZ, after hearing death news of their co-worker on the DEPZ road, said Khairul Mamun Mintu, a worker leader.

Abdul Hamid , senior station officer of DEPZ fire service, said the protesters vandalised and torched at least 14 vehicles inside DEPZ and on Nabinagar-Chandra highway.

Police said a worker named Azad died as a covered van ran him over. Azad used to work with Shanta Industries Ltd.

Javed Masud, OC (investigation) of Ashulia Police Station, said they brought the situation under control with help from industrial police.
