123rd birth anniv of Manorama Basu Masima observed
The 123rd birth anniversary of women's rights icon Manorama Basu Masima was observed in Barishal yesterday.
Manorama Basu Smriti Trust and Mahila Parishad Barishal held a discussion and a cultural event marking the day in front of Matri Mandir Government Primary School in Barishal city. Manorama founded the school at her own residence in 1973. Before that, she established 'Matri Mandir', an organisation to rehabilitate destitute women in 1933-34.
A devoted social worker, Manorama, later famous as 'Masima' (maternal aunt), founded a host of other social organisations and collectives. Some of these include Mohila Attorakkha Samity, Nari Kallyan Bhaban, Mukul Milon Khelaghar, Palli Unnyan Amrita Pathagar.
She was also involved in politics, and was sent to jail during both the anti-British Swadeshi Movement and in the Pakistan period. She was a member of the Communist Party and formed the Soviet Shurid Samity in 1932.
She remained active in progressive socio-cultural and political movements till she died in October 16, 1986.
Speakers and participants at yesterday's session asked everyone to remember her legacy and take her stories to the youth. Later, Udichi Barishal district unit performed 'Gonosangeet' as a tribute.
