‘Treasure hunt’ at Mirpur!
Police and Dhaka District Administration started an excavation process at a house in Mirpur 10 area of Dhaka today for unearthing a possible “hidden treasure” there.
Around 10:30am, the digging process began in two rooms of a one-storey building at Block C of Mirpur 10 in presence of Executive Magistrate Md Anwar Uz Jaman, who confirmed it to The Daily Star.
The excavation was suspended around 3:00pm for today after the workers managed to dig 4.5 feet deep into ground till then, the magistrate said at a press briefing from the spot.
"The building is too old, so we have suspended the excavation process for safety concerns," he said.
"We will try to seek experts’ help and restart the digging tomorrow if possible," he added.
The authorities concerned decided to carry on the excavation after a general diary (GD) was lodged with the Mirpur Police Station by one Abu Tayob from Teknaf in Cox's Bazar on July 10.
In the GD, Tayob claimed that his predecessors buried some gold in the house before leaving for Pakistan after the Liberation War in 1971, Dadon Fakir, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, told The Daily Star.
One of the caretakers of the property, Sumon, told The Daily Star that some three to four unidentified persons including a woman came to them offering bribe to get into the house on July 12.
Hearing the news, the present house owner, Monirul Alam, also filed a GD on July 13 urging police to settle the issue according to the rules.
In line with these developments, the district administration started the excavation process in assistance with police and the archeology department.
Monirul is bearing the cost of the excavation, the police official said.
If any treasure is found there it will be taken over by the government, the OC added.
Monirul, a private job holder, said he bought the house from one Selim Reza in 2010.
He kept the property vacant for few months under two caretakers as he was planning to develop a new building there, he added.
