A Jessore court yesterday sentenced a former BNP lawmaker to eight years in jail for illegally accumulating wealth worth Tk 93 lakh.

The special judge's court also ordered confiscation of MA Wahab's assets of the same amount. The ex-MP of Jhenaidah-1 constituency could not show the legal sources of his wealth. He was sent to prison after Judge Nitai Chandra Saha of the special judge's court gave the verdict.

Prosecutor Sirajul Islam said the lawmaker submitted a wealth statement to  the Anti-Corruption Commission on May 15, 2008, stating he had assets worth Tk 89.92 lakh, but he could not cite the sources of Tk 45 lakh of the total amount.

In this regard, ACC filed the case and after investigation, it found that Wahab amassed Tk 93 lakh of wealth from unknown sources.
