Stop road construction work for 14 days before, after Eid: FBCCI
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) has urged the government to put the road construction and repair work on hold for 14 days before and after the Eid-ul-Fitr to reduce the sufferings of the homegoers.
The construction works create long tailbacks, which causes huge financial losses, it said.
"Vehicles in Tongi alone lose Tk 10 crore worth fuel a day because of traffic congestions caused by road construction work," said FBCCI Vice-president Aminul Haque Shamim.
He spoke at the first meeting of the FBCCI Standing Committee on Transport and Communications (Railways, Roads and Highways) at the FBCCI's Dhaka office today.
The vehicles slow down due to the repair and construction works on roads and highways, said FBCCI Senior Vice-president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu.
He urged the government to postpone the construction work from April 27 to May 10 to make the Eid journey smoother.
He also called for the deployment of highway police at heavy traffic zones.
He said the Bangladesh Police should take stricter actions to stop extortion on the roads.
Babu also called for increasing the number of ferries and ferry trips to cut the long queue of the buses and trucks at Mawa and Aricha Ferry Ghats.
President of Bangladesh Bus Truck Owners Association and Chairman of the FBCCI Committee Ramesh Chandra Ghosh alleged that law enforcement members illegally collect money every night at Joykali Mandir and Ittefaq intersection in the capital.
He seeks help from the police to stop this illegal move.
He urged the government to refrain from imposing any new tax on the public transport sector in the next budget as it has been the most-affected sector during the coronavirus pandemic.
