Onion farmers to get loan, incentive: agriculture minister
Farmers will be given loan to make the country self-sufficient in production of onion and its seed, said Agriculture Minister Muhammad Abdur Razzaque.
Apart from that, the onion farmers, who will be affected by natural calamities, will be given incentives, the minister said while inspecting onion seed production at a farm in Faridpur Sadar today.
"We want to be self-sufficient in onion seed production. We also want to be self-reliant in onion production using these seeds. We are working towards this goal," Razzaque said.
He said the production of onion has increased by seven lakh tonnes in one year. Besides, summer onion cultivation is also being expanded, Razzaque said.
While talking about the loan and incentive for the onion farmers, he said farmers need to be protected from losses. "We have to look into the matter of interest of farmers who are cultivating onions with so much risk and hard work," he said.
"We are monitoring the market regularly. If the prices of onion go down further, steps will be taken to stop the import and increase the prices," the minister added.
Razzaque further said that the climate of the country is very conducive to onion cultivation.
"But the problem is that onion is very perishable. The country still does not have any technology to prevent onion rot and no cold storage has been set up for storage," he said adding that they stressing the need for expanding summer onion cultivation and preserving onions.
