Bonik Barta, BIDS award three entrepreneurs
The Bonik Barta and the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) yesterday honoured three bright entrepreneurs for their contribution to the economy.
Planning Minister MA Mannan and Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi handed out the Talented Entrepreneurs Award 2019 to Md Abul Kalam Azad, chairman of Azizu Recycling and E-Waste Company, Habibur Rahman Jewel, chief executive officer of Moonlight Pet Flakes Industry, and Md Mahmudul Hasan, chairman of Rokomari.com, an online book shop.
This was the sixth edition of the awards held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon hotel. Each winner was given a crest and a cheque worth Tk 3 lakh.
KAS Murshid, director general of the BIDS, and Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor of the Bonik Barta, spoke at the event, which was also attended by leaders of various chambers and trade bodies and heads of financial institutions, corporate bodies and civil society organisations.
Rokomari.com began its journey in 2012 as an online book store and has about two lakh titles in stock currently. The platform typically delivers 1,000-2,000 books a day.
Apart from selling books across the country, Rokomari.com sells books to readers in as many as 40 countries. It employs 130 people permanently and another 70 temporarily.
After receiving immense response from customers, the platform has expanded its wings and now sells CDs, DVDs, sports jerseys, and stationary items etc.
Azad established Azizu Recycling and E-Waste Company in 2012 with a motto to promote a green Bangladesh. The factory, which is located in Fatulla under Narayanganj district, is engaged in e-waste management and recycling.
Now the company's annual turnover stands at around Tk 36 crore. Moonlight Pet Flakes Industry began its journey in 2011 with a vision to recycle plastic bottles that degrade the environment. Now the company exports to India and China.
Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, chief executive officer and managing director of Robi Axiata, the platinum sponsor of the event, and Khwaja Shahriar, managing director of LankaBangla Finance, also spoke.
