Trade through Benapole suspended indefinitely
The export-import activities between Bangladesh and India through the Benapole Land Port was suspended indefinitely after a strike was called by port users at the Petrapole port in India this morning.
However, the delivery of goods including loading and unloading at the port is continuing normally, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting a Benapole port official.
In protest of various harassment by the land port manager at Petrapole, port users' organisations, including the C&F Agent Staff Association, the Transport Association, and the Motor Workers' Union, called the strike.
"Due to the strike, trade activities through Benapole-Petrapol land ports have remained suspended since this morning," said Abdul Jalil, deputy director of Benapole Land Port.
According to the traders at the port, the new LP manager at Petrapole port has been harassing port users following the enforcement of new rules.
Following the harassment, the port users have been holding meetings and rallies demanding the withdrawal of the new LP manager, they said.
The new LP manager is disrupting our trade by enforcing new rules on entry into port areas without informing the traders, said Kartik Chandra, general secretary of the Petrapole Port Staff Welfare Association.
"No transport worker is being allowed to enter the port premises without a custom identity card. Those involved in trade activities are facing various problems due to being unable to enter the port," he added.
