Two more doctors die of Covid-19
Two more doctors, who had tested positive for Covid-19 earlier, died today.
The deceased are Dr Gazi Zahirul Hasan, a professor of the paediatric surgery department at Bangladesh Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and Dr Mahmud Monowar, 43, assistant professor of Cardiology department of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD).
Gazi breathed his last around 1:15am at the intensive care unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Dr Mahmud succumbed around 9:30am at the ICU of NICVD, said Dr Nirupam Das, chief administrator of Bangladesh Doctors Foundation.
The BSMMU doctor began showing symptoms of Covid-19 more than a week ago, said Dr Shoheli Alam, an assistant professor at the hospital's paediatric surgery department.
Dr Gazi, who had been giving treatment to patients during the coronavirus outbreak, also showed symptoms of the infections more than a week ago, Dr Shoheli said, adding that he went into self-isolation at home afterwards.
Although his first test result came negative, he later went through a second test as his condition deteriorated and was tested positive for coronavirus infection, she said.
With Dr Gazi and Dr Mahmud, at least 29 doctors have died after contracting coronavirus infection, while five others passed away showing Covid-19-like symptoms.
Besides, around 1,100 doctors have so far been infected with the virus, according to the Bangladesh Doctors Foundation.
