Khaleda’s treatment abroad: Law minister says he might give opinion Sunday

Law Minister Ansul Huq today said he might give his opinion on Sunday (May 9) on the files regarding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's treatment abroad.

"I have received the file from the office of law secretary at 4pm. I will go through the files and then I will give my opinion on this issue. It is not possible for me to give my opinion today as I have to examine the file. Perhaps, I will give my opinion on the next working day (Sunday)," he told The Daily Star at 4:50pm today.

Law Minister Anisul Huq refused to say anything further on letting Khaleda Zia go abroad for better treatment.

Earlier at 12:20pm, he said that the secretary at his ministry received the files from the home ministry around 11:00pm last night.

Khaleda was admitted to Evercare Hospital on April 27 night for diagnosis after testing positive for Covid for the second time on April 24. She first tested Covid positive on April 11.

The BNP chief was sent to jail on February 8, 2018, after a special court sentenced her to five years in prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. On October 30, 2018, the High Court raised her punishment to 10 years.

The government released Khaleda, the former premier, on March 25 last year after suspending her jail sentence as per section 401 (1) of the Criminal Code of Procedure (CrPC).

Later the suspension of her jail sentence was extended twice and the government issued separate notifications to this effect. The notification said Khaleda will receive treatment at her home and she cannot go abroad during this period.
