College Girl’s Death: Cops to miss deadline for probe report
Investigators are unlikely to submit a probe report in the case filed against Bashundhara Group Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir over the death of a college girl at a Gulshan flat in the capital.
A Dhaka court earlier directed the authorities to submit the probe report by May 30.
Asked, an officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Gulshan division), seeking anonymity, said they would not be able to complete the report by the deadline.
"We are yet to receive the autopsy report," he said.
On the scheduled date, police will seek for extension of the deadline from the court, the officer further said.
Sources in the Forensic Medicine Department of Dhaka Medical College said the autopsy report was yet to be completed.
Earlier, Mohammad Maksud, head of the department, said, "It might take a month and a half or two to get the final autopsy report."
Police on April 26 recovered the body of the girl hanging from the ceiling fan in her bedroom. Her legs were touching the bed and both knees were a little bent.
The following day, her sister sued Sayem Sobhan Anvir for abetting her death by suicide.
Meanwhile, the victim's elder sister, who filed the case, on Sunday said, "We have still been receiving threats.
"This time people well-known to us and even relatives are asking us not to proceed with the case," she added.
On Sunday, she told our Cumilla correspondent, "One such person offered us money on Thursday with condition that we have to remain quiet."
She, however, refused to disclose the identities of the persons who are offering them money or asking them to keep mum.
She added, "They have threatened us both (the complainant and her husband) to be terminated from our bank jobs. They are trying to make us financially damaged for refusing their proposals. We are scared."
Mizanur Rahman, husband of the complainant, said they were under pressure from different quarters to withdraw the case against Anvir.
He also alleged that the Bashundhara group was trying to cover up the case.
Earlier on May 1, the family filed a General Diary with Kotwali Model Police Station in Cumilla after unknown people threaten them of dire consequences over the phone.
He also said that they contacted Gulshan police over the phone to know the investigation progress recently and police only told them that the investigation was ongoing.
"Police also told us that for investigation Gulshan police will visit Cumilla," he added.
Contacted, Abul Hasan, investigation officer of the case and officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station, refused to make any comment.
The grieved family of the college girl also expressed frustration and dissatisfaction as police have not yet arrested or even interrogated Anvir.
"My sister was in a relationship with Anvir who promised her to marry and settle abroad. On April 26 morning, my sister called me and said Anvir would not marry her and had scolded her. She also said she was in trouble and an accident may happen anytime," said the victim's elder sister.
