Tamim's Asia Cup uncertain

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has suffered a fractured left wrist after being hit by a bouncer from Sri Lanka pacer Suranga Lakmal early in their Asia Cup opener. He will not take any further part in the match and there is serious doubt about his participation in the rest of the regional cricket extravaganza.

He was sent to the hospital for scans immediately after suffering the injury in the last ball of the second over.

"Medical reports have revealed that there is a fracture on his left wrist," informed team manager Khaled Mahmud after getting the results back from the hospital roughly two and a half hours after the incident. "He will definitely not bat again today. As to the rest of the Asia Cup, I am not saying that he is ruled out of the tournament. We will assessed within two-three days' time and a decision will be taken."

Bangladesh got off to a terrible start, losing the wickets of opener Liton Das and number three Shakib Al Hasan in the first over to a fiery Lasith Malinga.

The biggest blow however may have been the injury to Tamim. Having scored two singles off the two balls he faced, he went to hook his third deliver and was hit on the left wrist. He immediately opened his gloves and clutched his wrist, and was soon being led off the field by physio Thihan Chandramohan.

Tamim was already struggling from a separate injury to his right ring finger, but played the match as he has been managing the pain with medication.
