What equations for the Tigers to stay alive in Asia Cup?

Bangladesh are staring at the bottom of the barrel after losing opener Tamim Iqbal to injury and two back-to-back defeats -- to Afghanistan in the group stage and then India in the Super Four. They are currently bottom of the table as things stand.

The Tigers face Afghanistan in a do-or-die Super Four clash today and we look at the possible scenarios and equations which will keep them in the tournament. As we will see, the Tigers will also be dependent upon results of the other match between India and Pakistan.

Bangladesh win, Pakistan win

If Bangladesh and Pakistan both win, then Bangladesh will remain alive in the tournament and will have to beat Pakistan in their final Super Four match on 26th September to make the final. However net run rates will come into play in such a scenario.

Bangladesh win, India win

If India manages to beat Pakistan like they did in the group stage while the Tigers win their match against Afghanistan, then they will be able to keep their hopes of staying alive in the tournament.

Bangladesh lose to Afghanistan, Pakistan win against India

In such a scenario, the Tigers are out of the tournament. Pakistan will have two wins if they beat India today while Bangladesh will remain bottom without any wins. Even a win in their last Super Four match against Pakistan will not make a difference. Either Afghanistan or India will join Pakistan on two victories and make it to the final.

Bangladesh lose, India win

Even if Bangladesh lose to Afghanistan today, they can remain in the tournament if India win against Pakistan today. India then will have two wins while Pakistan will have one. Bangladesh will have to win against Pakistan in their last Super Four match while India beat Afghanistan. In such a scenario, India will have three wins while the other three teams will have one win each and it will come down to net run-rate to decide which of those three teams make the final alongside India.

As we can see, the only way the Tigers can stay alive in the tournament even after a loss today is that if India win against Pakistan. If Bangladesh lose and India lose too, then Bangladesh are definitely out.
