Syed Rashad Imam Tanmoy talks about Art Patrol

Cartoonist and Founder of Cartoon People, Syed Rashad Imam Tanmoy, along with the students of Sirajuddin Ahmed Academy, Sylhet, participated at the Rivers of the Worlds project in 2012. It is an on-going project of theThames festival Trust and the British Council. They created a pair of river paintings, one of which depicted the River Surma in Sylhet, Bangladesh, in the local Nakshi Kantha style. The other one represented the Thames in the UK, rendered in a vector-based art style.

Based on Rivers of the Worlds, The British Council Dhaka painted a graffiti, covering a whole wall, at their patio. The graffiti team, led by Tanmoy, included Muhammad Ayan, Junaid Iqbal Ishmam, Kishwar Kaniz Tanzim, AngonaAhsana, Rehnuma Proshoon, and Afsana Parvin Urmy.

The inauguration ceremony of the graffiti patio, along with interactive fun activities, live caricature and an artist talk called 'Art Patrol' by Syed Rashad Imam Tanmoy, took place recently at The British Council Dhaka. Art Patrol focuses on incorporating basic rules of art in the primary level education. “Growing up, we are taught various rules and equations of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in schools,” says Tanmoy. “However, not enough emphasis is put on Art classes. Mostly, children are made to copy the drawings from the board. Hence, when someone later on decides to pursue art as a career, they have no clue about the basic rules of art.”

Tanmoy believes that nurturing the potential of an artist from a young age will ease their path in the long run. Besides, the paintings used in the schools are quite simple. Through Art Patrol, Cartoon People aims to change that by creating awareness videos on YouTube. They also intend to transform the monotonous designs into creative and innovative ones for schools and kid-friendly places for free.
