Yesteryear Once More!
Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) organised a solo musical soiree by noted artiste Selina Azad on May 4 at Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbagh. The singer performed adhunik Bangla songs most of which she recorded for films of yesteryear.
The singer's husband, eminent musician Azad Rahman, directed the music for the featured songs. The packed audience was spellbound by Azad's soulful singing. She took the stage after 30 years.
Azad's repertoire included Doyel Koel Shalik, Rimjhim Rimjhim Brishti, Abar Kokhon Hobe Dekha, Tumi Hol-e Tumi Dur Elo Kachhe and Monero Rong-e Rangabo. Several young artistes of Sangskriti Kendra also presented two chorus songs at the event. It was one of the most memorable events by IGCC as its director Jayashree Kundu mentioned in her concluding speech after the performances. Eminent music composer and director Sheikh Sadi Khan, who attended the event, spoke highly of the singer.
Azad is also a music teacher and general secretary of Sangskriti Kendra, which was established in 1990 in Dhaka by music maestro Ustad Azad Rahman. Born in a musical family, Azad took musical lessons from Ustad P.C. Gomez, Ustad Ful Mohammad and Nazrul Singers Sohrab Hossain and Sudhin Das.
She is a Special Grade artiste of Bangladesh Betar and BTV. She earned great fame as a playback singer for the films Masud Rana, Dashyu Banhur, Khokan Sona, Mayar Badhon and more.
