A night of celebrations
The 2018 Billboard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, hosted by Kelly Clarkson. She made an emotional plea over the school shooting in Texas which left the crowd in a mix of emotions. Artistes also paid tribute to the late Avicii, who passed away last month. Given that we are currently transitioning through the #MeToo era, the ceremony would have been incomplete without mentioning it.
Janet Jackson won the Icon prize and also made her stance on the #MeToo movement. "My prayer is that, weary of such noise, we will turn back to the source of all calmness, that source is God,” she said.“Everything we lack, God has in abundance: compassion, sensitivity, patience and boundless love." She is the seventh artist ever to win the Icon award - following in the footsteps of Prince, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Cher, Neil Diamond and Jennifer Lopez.
The big winners of the night were Kendrick Lamar and Ed Sheeran, receiving six awards each. Kendrick Lamar received Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Male Artist, Top Rap Album, Top Streaming Artist and Top Streaming Song (Audio). Ed Sheeran took home Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist and Top Radio Song. Bruno Mars, Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber follow close behind, winning five awards each.
Other winners included Taylor Swift, who bagged top female artist and top selling album for reputation. Camila Cabello won the Billboard chart achievement award, while Khalid won top new artist.
