ON-SCREEN LOVE AND HAPPY ENDINGS
Through heartbreaks and happy endings, romantic duos in cinema have carried us all on many emotional journeys. There are some screen pairs whose chemistry sizzles more than others, going onto working together in many subsequent films. There are some treasurable instances where on screen romance transcends into real life, yielding in happy marriages and growing families.
The first memorable pairing in Bangla cinema occurred before our nation's independence when Sujata and Azim shared the screen space in Roopban. They became an iconic on-screen couple in the '60s and acted in many films together including Obanchito. As their characters fell in love in many narratives, the couple's attraction for each other grew, and they got married.
Shabnam and Rahman are another popular couple of the '60s. Shabnam had acted in Urdu films earlier with Nadeem, before landing a role in Rajdhani'r Bukey with Rahman. The couple also went onto act in another hit film titled Darshan.
Post independence years saw the rise of Kabori and Razzak. While Razzak appeared alongside many leading ladies, his roles with Kabori became especially popular with the audience. They appeared together in Neel Akasher Niche, Abirbhab, Sritituku Thak, Darpachurno, Rongbaaj, Shorolipi and a few more.
After Raj Razzak, Alamgir became the next actor to gain hero status in Bangladesh's budding film industry. The audience found themselves rooting for his pairing with Shabana, and they acted together in a staggering 120 films.
Babita found immense popularity in Bangladeshi cinema as a lead actor and worked alongside many male leads throughout her career. However, her pairing with Zafar Iqbal proved to be the most popular. Zafar Iqbal's image as a romantic hero and a singer complemented perfectly with Babita's glamour, resulting in many hit films. Some of their popular works together include Obuj Hridoy, Ek Mutho Bhaat, Shongram, Shurjo Grohon and many more. The pair continued to work together until Zafar Iqbal's tragic death.
Actor Farooque also worked with popular stars such as Babita and Kabori during his career. His top films with Kabori include Sarang Bou and Sujon Shathi and his popular works with Babita include Noyonmoni, Lathiyaal and more.
Furthermore, Ilias Kanchan is most remembered for his roles with Chompa, particularly their performance together in the films Shohojatri and Bheja Chokh. Chompa worked alongside Manna in many films later in her career.
The 1990s observed the emergence of Nayeem and Shabnaz in Chadni. The pair won each other's hearts as well as those of the audience, and later married.
But in the same era another hero and heroine took the country by storm, ending in a tragedy the nation would never forget. Salman Shah and Moushumi made their debut in Keyamot Theke Keyamot, and would only act together in four more films before pairing up with other actors. Salman Shah went onto appear in a few more films with Shabnoor before his untimely death, while Moushumi graced the screen with Omar Sani. Moushumi and Omar Sani tied the knot in real life, and continue to work together today. Shabnoor garnered popularity with actor Riaz, appearing in many box office hits.
In today's era of films, Shakib Khan has become the 'King of Dhaliwood'. He gained popularity with his appearances alongside Apu Biswas, and they worked in over 70 films together. The duo fell in love on the sets and married, but the match was not meant to be as the couple parted ways recently.
