5 workers sustain burns in Gazipur steel mill
Five workers of a steel mill in Gazipur's Tongi area sustained burn injuries while melting iron early today.
The incident took place around 4am at SS Steel Mills Limited. The workers were taken to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery following the incident, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
The injured are Mozammel, 22, Dulal, 25, Niloy, 25, Ripon, 30, and Azahar, 26.
Among them, Mozammel sustained 90 percent burns while Dulal, Niloy and Ripon were suffering from more than 50 percent burn wounds, the inspector said.
They were being treated at the institute and Azahar went home after receiving primary treatment.
The five workers were melting iron when flakes from the fire suddenly hit them. Other workers of the mill rushed them to Tongi Ahsanullah Master General Hospital from where they were sent to DMCH, our correspondent reports quoting victims' family members.
Contacted, Mizanur Rahman, a firefighter of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence said that the fire service was not called or informed regarding the situation.
Emdadul Hosen, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tongi West Police Station said that police filed a general diary to enquire if the mill ensured proper safety measures for the workers.
A police team has already been sent there to inspect the situation, he said adding that if anybody files a complaint on behalf of the victims, police will take steps.
