2 IFIC Bank officials, 3 others jailed

A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced five persons, including two IFIC Bank officials, to five years' rigorous imprisonment for embezzling around Tk 25 lakh from the bank.
The convicts are the bank's Teri Bazar branch Manager Fayez Ahmed Siddique and Grade-1 Officer Shafikul Islam; and three traders Abu Jafor, Abdul Aziz and Modachher Hossain.
Chittagong Divisional Special Judge SM Ataur Rahman gave the verdict after testifying 12 witnesses, said Anti-Corruption Commission Public Prosecutor Advocate Mahmudul Haque Mahmud.
According to the prosecution, through mutual connivance, the convicts embezzled mortgage money worth Tk 77 lakh of a trader Babul Nath through opening a fake account by his name between October 5, 2008 and November 3, 2008.
Later, the two bank officials repaid Tk 51.96 lakh after getting notice from the bank.
On August 18, 2009, the bank filed a case with Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court in this connection.
