2 dead in Dinajpur road crash; police suspect helper was driving truck
A driver and a helper died when their truck hit another truck parked on the road in Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur early today.
The deceased were identified as truck driver Ceylon Mia, 40, and helper Saiful Islam, 20, of Bansh Ara village in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia.
Md Mozaffar Rahman, a sub-inspector of Ghoraghat Police Station, told The Daily Star, "A stone-laden truck, heading towards Dhaka from Panchagarh, hit another truck parked on the left side of the road in Ghoraghat Bazar area around 3am today.
Helper Saiful died on the spot. Later, members of fire service recovered his body from under the steering wheel, our Bogra correspondent reports quoting the SI.
"On the other hand, driver Ceylon Mia was rescued and taken to Ghoraghat Upazila Health Complex where he died later," the police official said.
Asked about the reason of the accident, the police said, "Helper Saiful's body was recovered from under the wheel on the side of the driver's seat and the driver has been rescued from the helper's seat. So, we think the accident happened because the helper was driving the truck and he was drowsy also," SI Mozaffar said.
Both the trucks were seized, the SI said.
One of the bodies was kept at the hospital while another was taken to the police station.
Confirming the accident, Ghoraghat Fire Service official Niranjan Sarkar said the bodies were handed over to their family members later.
