Team Bangladesh at International Economics Olympiad 2019

International Economics Olympiad (IEO) is an annual competition in economics organised for high school students with an aim to promote logical thinking and the creative application of general knowledge in solving problems. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees for IEO is Noble prize winner, Eric Maskin who is also a professor at Harvard University. This year, the second edition of the competition was hosted by Higher School of Economics (Russia) in partnership with Sberbank in St Petersburg, Russia. The competition comprised of three different rounds: Financial Literacy, Economics and Business Case. The Financial Literacy round included a simulation game, where a participant had to accumulate the maximum possible amount of wealth in the shortest time through different investments in stocks, bonds, exchange rate market, real estate and other valuables. The Economics round was a four-hour examination consisting of multiple-choice and theory questions. The business case competition challenged students to use their analytic abilities, critical-thinking and evaluation skills to solve business cases and deliver solutions to problems through simplified presentations. The preliminary round for the selection of the team consisted of two tests. The first test was a multiple-choice question round and the second one was based on theory. Three participants, out of a total of 500, were selected to represent Bangladesh in Russia.

Team Bangladesh comprised of Sunehra Tazreen, Esfar Jawad and Darpan Barua from SFX Green Herald International School. They participated in IEO for the first time under the supervision of their team leader, Md Al-Amin Parvez Lecturer, Dhaka School of Economics, University of Dhaka. Esfar and Darpan managed to be in the top 50 of the Financial Literacy Round while Sunehra was among the top 50 in the Economics Round. She was also awarded as the Best Performer of the team. In the Business Case round, they were amongst the top 15 teams. The participants had a remarkable experience.
