Marina Farook talks women’s health
Marina Farook is a nutritionist and health coach who helps women reconnect with their physical, mental and spiritual strength, using nutrition and strength training. She shares her research-backed insight about female health and fertility for young women in Dhaka.
Whether young women want to be mothers or not, should they be concerned about their fertility?
They should be concerned with their health and hormones. The main question is not "do I want to have children?" it is "am I healthy enough to have children?"
As a female, you are predisposed to being fertile until you hit menopause.
Why is a woman menstruating until she is nearly 60? Nature must have a reason. Maybe because at age 50 she wants to have a baby.
They say you should have a baby when you are younger, because females are born with a finite number of eggs, which lessen with menstruation cycles. You have more eggs and more active hormones when you are younger but nobody should rush. Women can have children even at 45.
What is most alarming, in regards to fertility, for women in Dhaka?
The general lack of knowledge and the unwillingness to learn is alarming. Excess sugar consumption also has negative impacts on hormones.
How much power does the average woman in Dhaka have in controlling her fertility health?
99 percent, if you choose to control it. Fertility means balanced hormones and functioning reproductive organs. What upsets your hormones and fertility is improper nutrition. Once your thyroid gets healthy fats, from your diet, it can make hormones. Focus on eating properly, sleeping on time, drinking enough water, managing stress and exercising five to six times a week. Transform into your best self and then fertility will be a result of that. Remember that anti-aging, replacing dead and dying cells with new cells, comes from muscle-centric exercise. A body can be performing as a 25-35 year old when it is biologically 45 years old.
What are major signs of fertility hormone imbalance?
Irregular menstruation cycles. A midsection that's heavy compared to the rest of her body; fats in the midsection is "living fat" because it sends toxins into the blood.Severe acne on the face and back. Hair-fall and brittle hair. Mood swings are also a sign. You should be worried if you have three or more of these. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is usually a result of these.
What would you recommend for a balanced diet?
I recommend pure ghee, coconut oil, whole chicken eggs, white meat, red meat, untampered fish, local fruits and vegetables.Canned food is dangerous, the chemical lining inside affects female fertility the most. Many chicken wings have artificial hormones and antibiotics, eat only the chicken breasts, legs and thigh meat. Plastic bottles are awful, and many BPA-free labels are lies. Drink water out of a glass or wood container. I say that food is the raw materials for the body. We need proper nutrition, which includes food and supplements.
Any final words you would like to leave us with?
Human beings have a set of good genetics and bad genetics. Through your lifestyle habits you can either highlight your good genes or your bad genes. This is proof that your health is under your control.
