Bangladesh restricted to 124 for nine
Bangladesh were restricted to a below-par score of 124 for 9 in their second Super 12 match of the World Cup by England. It was another poor batting display from the Tigers where the top-order failed to fire and the middle-order, despite showing signs of reviving the innings, fell into dispair due to England's sharpness on the field and the Tigers' lack of it.
Nasum Ahmed, not known for his batting, was able to target the shorter leg side boundary in the 19th over and picked up two sixes and a four off Adil Rashid which eventually pushed Bangladesh's total over 120. Nasum remained unbeaten on 9-ball 19. Tymal Mills got two wickets, that of Nurul Hasan (16 off 18) and Mustafizur Rahman (off 1) as Bangladesh batters produced just 124 runs on the board.
Poor shots, miscommunication and lack of power the downfall in middle overs
Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad had been able to weather the storm after the loss of the three wickets in the Powerplay. The duo put on a 37-run stand in 32 deliveries but just when things were looking up for the Tigers, Mushfiqur (29 off 30) lost his cool trying to reverse-sweep Livingstone in the 11th over. England review after appeal and the ball did pitch in line and was going to hit the stumps. The reverse sweep has not aided Mushy in recent times and it did not help him here.
Afif's (5 off 6) stay at the crease lasted only six deliveries. A severe miscommunication with captain Mahmudullah saw Afif going for a second after Riyad had tickled it towards fine leg but the ball was already in the fielder's hand. Afif went for the second with Riyad too running in from the non-striker's end. Afif tried to make his way back to the striker's end, cancelling their plan for the second but it was too late.
Leggies are important. While Bangladesh have none, England has Livingstone along with Adil Rashid and it is the former which breaks Bangladesh's back even as he is only a part-timer. Mahmudullah (19 off 24) tried to go big over long off but a edge sees the ball loop to short third man for an easy catch.
Poor Powerplay display: Liton, Naim and Shakib back in the hut
England spinner Moeen Ali struck with back to back deliveries in the third over as Bangladesh were in early trouble. Liton (9 off 8) continued his lack of form with the bat and having struck two boundaries in Moeen's first over, he was lulled into a sweep shot in the third over and managed a top-edge which was caught at deep square-leg. To make matters worse, Mohammad Naim (5 off 7) tried to play his favourite heave shot, which made very little cricketing sense. Woakes at mid-on takes the catch as Naim only manages to connect poorly. Mushfiqur Rahim managed to keep out Moeen's hattrick ball.
Shakib departed in the sixth over,. trying to whip away a Woakes delivery that caught him slightly higher on the bat than he would have liked. Shakib wanted to clear the man at short fine-leg but Rashid, standing there, managed to run back to take a brilliant diving catch. Bangladesh managed just 27 runs in the Powerplay.
