Another bleak day for Bangladesh at the Asian Games

Ruman Sana and Co squandered an opportunity to make history and win Bangladesh's first ever archery medal in the Asian Games, suffering a 6-0 set points defeat against Indonesia in the bronze-deciding match of the men's recurve team event at Fuyang Yinhu Sports Center in Hangzhou yesterday.

The team of Ruman, Hakim Ahmed Rubel and Sagor Islam had earlier defeated Thailand in quarterfinal by 5-4 set points before suffering a 5-3 set points defeat in the semifinal against India. The archery team had a chance to win Bangladesh's second medal in the ongoing Games and add archery as the fourth discipline where Bangladesh have won a medal in the Asian Games.

"I hoped to give a breakthrough in at least one category out of 10 but overall the archers did not do well," said the archery team's German coach Martin Frederick.

Cricketers fall apart against India

Bangladesh suffered a humiliating nine-wicket defeat against India in the semifinal of men's cricket at the Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field in Hangzhou.

Saif Hassan's team could only muster 96-9 in their 20 overs. In reply, India stormed to 97-1 in just 10.4 overs.

"If we could have played according to our strength with the squad we have, it was possible [to do better]. But it was a bad day for us," Saif said after the crushing defeat.

Earlier, Bangladesh had scrapped past Malaysia by two runs in the quarterfinal in another low-scoring match.

Hockey team finish 8th

Bangladesh hockey team finished eighth among 12 teams after losing 4-3 against Oman in the seventh-place deciding match at Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium.

Bangladesh, who finished sixth in the previous edition, took a 2-0 lead with strikes from Milon Hossain and Rasel Mahmud Jimmy.

But Oman bounced back by scoring four goals in a span of 17 minutes. Sohanur Rahman Sabuj reduced the margin of defeat for Bangladesh in the final minute.

Karateka Antara loses in quaterfinal

Karateka Humaira Akhter Antara suffered a 9-1 points defeat to Kymbat Toitonova of Kyrgyzstan in the quarterfinals of 61kg kumite category.

Earlier in the day, the South Asian Games gold medallist had notched a 5-1 points victory over Nepal's Nirupa Tamang in the Round of 16 to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Another SA Games gold medallist, Mohammad Al Amin, lost 6-0 against Indonesia's Ari Saputra in the Round of 16 bout in 60kg category.
