Mithun elected CWAB president

National team cricketer Mohammad Mithun was elected as the new president of the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), beating lone competitor Salim Shahed in the election held at the BCB Academy building on Thursday.

Mithun received 154 votes while Shahed, a match referee, received 34 votes in the polls held in the afternoon after CWAB's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

"We will of course try to solve everything through negotiation. If that's not possible, as I have come here to protect the rights of the cricketers, I have to speak for them. If that makes some in the board unhappy, there is nothing I can do about it," Mithun told the media after getting elected.

"The BCB is our guardian. We can go to our guardian with whatever demands that we have," he added.

Mithun takes over from former Bangladesh captain Naimur Rahman Durjoy, who had held the post from 2014 till March of 2025.

Meanwhile, the remaining 10 posts were decided uncontested.

Those elected unopposed are -- Shahriar Hossain Bidyut (senior vice-president), Nurul Hasan Sohan (vice-president), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shamsur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rumana Ahmed, Khaled Mashud Pilot, Imrul Kayes, Irfan Sukkur, and Akbar Ali (executive members).

Earlier, Shahed had told the media that he decided to run in the polls to prevent what he termed an "auto pass" election.

A total of 212 voters had registered for the polls. The election commission led by BCB director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu and former national cricketer Nasir Ahmed Nasu had arranged both physical and online voting.
