Govt inks 163MW deal with Kushiara Power
The government yesterday signed an agreement with Kushiara Power Company to produce 163 megawatt electricity.
Bangladesh Power Development Board will purchase electricity from the company for the next 22 years at Tk 2.0157 a kilowatt-hour.
Kushiara Power, a consortium of Shenzhen Nanshan Power Co and Kushiara DBPL, will set up a gas-fired combined cycle power plant at Fenchuganj in Sylhet in the next two years.
Md Azizul Islam, secretary of BPDB, and Farzana Chowdhury, managing director of Kushiara Power, inked the deal at Biddyut Bhaban in the capital.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith said the government already doubled the power generation capacity in the last four years.
This plant will help mitigate power problem, which will be solved in the next two-three years, Muhith said.
The simple cycle unit of the plant will start commercial operations within 18 months of the project effective date while the combined-cycle of the plant will commission within 22 months.
The private sponsor company has an obligation to start commercial production by January in 2015.
Non-resident Bangladeshis will provide 80 percent of the project cost, which is Tk 1,500 crore, and Kushiara Power will provide the rest, AS Chowdhury, director of the power company, said.
