Defying the "shutdown" programme announced by Awami League -- whose activities are banned now -- for November 16 and 17, Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation (Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation) has announced that vehicles will operate across the country.

Humayun Kabir Khan, acting general secretary of the federation, made the announcement at a press conference at its central office in Dhaka's Motijheel today.

The government has assured the federation of compensation if any vehicle or transport worker comes under attack during the shutdown, Khan said, reading from a written statement.

The press conference was also attended by the federation's acting president Abdur Rahim Box, joint secretaries Abbas Uddin and Jubayer Jakir, Organising Secretary Abul Kashem and others.
