Road crashes kill 5 in 2 districts
At least five people were killed, and three others injured in road accidents in Cox’s Bazar and Jamalpur yesterday.
Three people, including two sisters, were killed and three others injured after a truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway yesterday afternoon.
The deceased were sisters Rubina Akter, 40, and Shahina Akter, 42, of Harinmara in Ukhiya upazila. The identity of the third victim, a man, could not be confirmed immediately, said Officer-in-Charge Sukanta Chakraborty of Ramu Highway Police Station.
Police said the auto-rickshaw, carrying six people including the driver, was travelling from Cox’s Bazar to Ukhiya when it collided with an oncoming truck. Police seized the truck, but the driver fled.
In a separate accident in Jamalpur, two men were killed after a truck ran over them in the Digpait area of Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
The deceased were Md Nani, 60, and Md Hafiz, 55. Police and locals said the two were standing beside the Jamalpur-Tangail highway near Digpait Kachabazar when a Jamalpur-bound truck veered off the road and hit them.
