Nothing to fear over new US visa policy: Peter Haas
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas said there is nothing to fear because of the new US visa policy announced for Bangladesh recently as it is meant to encourage behaviours for free and fair elections.
He made the comments to the journalists after a photo exhibition held at EMK Centre on the 50 years of US-Bangladesh bilateral relationship.
He said Bangladesh prime minister is committed to free and fair elections and the US visa policy is to support that commitment. It is for the people of Bangladesh, Peter Haas said.
On May 24, the US announced a new visa policy for Bangladesh that will be able to restrict visas for those involved in vote rigging, intimidation and preventing the civil society and media from the right to speech.
He said the US appreciates Bangladesh' welcoming of the international observers that will help Bangladesh hold free and fair elections.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Awami League leader Shammi Ahmed, among others, were present at the inaugural of the exhibition.
