1 gets life in prison for rape in Shariatpur

A Shariatpur tribunal today sentenced a man to life in prison in a case filed over the rape of a college student.

The convict Masud Bepari (31), is the son of Yunus Bepari, a former pro-Awami League mayor of Jajira Municipality in Shariatpur.

"Judge Abdus Salam Khan of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict in presence of the convict," Special Public Prosecutor Firoz Ahmed told The Daily Star.

The tribunal also fined Masud Tk 50,000, in default of which he would have to serve an additional six months in jail.

It also acquitted another accused Sharif Sarder from the case as the charges against him were not proved, according to the judgement.

According to the case documents, Masud Bepari on June 29, 2019, called the victim, a student of Jajira Girls' College, to go to his house at Hariyasha in Jajira, saying that he would solve some issues related to her and Sharif. But he raped the girl after she went to his house.

The following day, the victim filed a rape case against Masud and Sharif with Jajira Police Station.

On September 28 the same year, police pressed charges against the two accused.
