Fire claimed 4 lives in Sept; highest number of incidents in Dhaka: fire service
Four people were killed and 11 others injured in 1,577 fire incidents throughout the country during the month of September, according to data of the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Among the incidents, 155 took place in Dhaka city, 27 more than in August, shows the data that was released today.
The statistics indicated that Dhaka division had the highest number of fire incidents with 603 cases, followed by 189 in Chittagong division, 225 in Rajshahi division, 132 in Khulna division, 63 in Mymensingh division, 57 in Sylhet division, 60 in Barisal division, and 248 in Rangpur division.
However, there was a decrease in the overall number of fire incidents from August to September as the country witnessed 1,667 fire-related occurrences in August.
Notably, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Hazaribagh, Tejgaon, Baridhara, and Uttara areas in the capital experienced the highest number of the fire incidents.
In addition, the fire service took part in rescue operations of 787 different incidents of accidents nationwide in September.
These accidents resulted in 184 fatalities and 777 injuries. Of them, 590 were related to road accidents, while others were attributed to causes such as kitchen gas cylinder mishaps, gas pipeline faults, elevator accidents, lightning strikes, and drowning in rivers and water bodies.
Seventy-four people drowned in rivers, ponds, and water bodies across the country.
In Dhaka city alone, 11 individuals were killed in 49 different types of accidents.
The areas of Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Tejgaon, and Old Dhaka within the city reported a higher incidence of accidents.
Moreover, there were 159 accidents in Dhaka division, 55 in Mymensingh division, 102 in Chittagong division, 201 in Rajshahi division, 88 in Khulna division, 27 in Sylhet division, 41 in Barisal division, and 114 in Rangpur division.
The Fire Service and Civil Defense responded to emergencies through 4,354 calls for fire and various accidents in September. Additionally, they provided ambulance services for 1,098 patients through 1,152 calls.
