CU teacher killed in road accident
A Chittagong University (CU) teacher died as a microbus collided with his motorbike in the university's gate-1 area early yesterday.
The deceased is Aftab Hossain, associate professor of the university's Zoology department, said police.
According to police sources, Aftab was going towards the city on his scooter from the university. Around 12:30am, a Hathazari-bound microbus, coming from the opposite direction, hit Aftab's scooter.
Eye witness Moktar babu said, "I was waiting for a CNG and the scooter rider was trying to cross the road, suddenly the microbus came and hit the scooter."
Aftab was seriously injured and rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Kamrul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Raozan Highway Police Station, said locals detained the microbus driver Masud Parvez and handed him over to the police.
Police also seized the microbus.
"After filing a case against the driver, we've already sent him to court," he added.
After the incident, students of the university blocked the Chattogram-Rangamati highway at 3:00am for around 30 minutes, demanding the construction of a foot-overbridge and speed breaker in the accident site.
Aftab Hossain's namaz-e-janaza was held at 2:00pm at the university's central mosque. He was later buried at the university cemetery at 2:30pm.
RHD and local administration have set up speed-breaker and zebra crossing at the spot of the accident yesterday.
In Sylhet, three people, including a couple, were killed in a head-on collision between a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw and a pickup van in Sylhet's Golapganj upazila yesterday morning.
The accident occurred around 8:30am in Ranaping area on Sylhet-Zakiganj regional road.
The deceased are Lutfur Rahman (72), former Charkhai union parishad member in Beanibazar and a resident of Uttar Chakrabani village, his wife Jeli Begum (60) and Yunus Mia of Topkhana village in Zakiganj upazila.
Another accident victim, who was critically injured, has been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
Citing witnesses, Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Golapganj Police Station, said, "The Sylhet-bound auto-rickshaw collided head-on with the Beanibazar-bound pickup van, killing the three on the spot. Their bodies were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy."
