Bangladesh League champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club made a flying start to their Grameenphone Super Cup campaign with an effortless 6-1 win over Brothers Union in the tournament opener at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday. Stephen Loga Bouga struck twice while Emanuel Ayuk, Femi Orunnimi, substitutes Atiqur Rahman Meshu and Zahid Hasan Emily struck one goal apiece for Sheikh Jamal while Everton Souza scored the consolation for Brothers Union in front of some 3000 spectators. Sheikh Jamal, wearing the Sky Blue and white stripes fashioned after the Argentina jerseys instead of their first-choice yellow and blue, toyed with Brothers Union and condemned the Oranges to their worst defeat of the season. Brothers, who had made the league champions sweat for their 2-2 draw in their last match of the professional league two weeks ago, simply had no answer to the opponents fire power this time. Brothers coach Wasim Iqbal blamed their lack of practice for the defeat and saw no further hope of qualifying for the semifinals of the Tk one-crore tournament. “Every department collapsed because of alack of practice, and we could not even give our 50 per cent compared to what we did in the league,” Wasim said. “Even we could not expect such a humiliating defeat.” Sheikh Jamal's Sri Lankan coach Packeer Ali was also surprised with the scoreline and gave full credit to the players for availing the opportunities that came their way. “We just came here to win the match but did not expect such a big win. It was possible because the regular players and substitutes availed every chance they found,” said Packeer Ali. Packeer Ali kept national players like Zahid Hasan Emily, winger Zahid Hossain, Meshu, and defender Rezaul Karim Reza out of his starting eleven to accommodate four foreign recruits. Local defenders Mohammad Sujan and Wali Faisal also found their place in the starting eleven. Cameroonian trio of Loga Bouga, Emmanuel Ayuk and Nigerian Femi Orunnimi justified their inclusion finding the back of the net while Emily and Meshu also proved their scoring touch after coming off the bench. From the world go, Sheikh Jamal showed their mettle and could have taken the lead inside the first minute but Loga Bouga floated his effort over the crosspiece despite having opposition goalkeeper Atiqul Islam Tareq in a one-on-one situation. The Dhanmondi-based outfit had to wait till the thirtieth minute to break the deadlock when Ayuk availed a chip from midfielder Mamunul Islam inside the box and fired home after a delightful turnaround (1-0). Femi twice came close to doubling the lead before Loga Bouga brilliantly placed a Shakil Ahmed cut-back home over the head of Tareq six minutes into the second half. Tareq then was replaced by Brothers' regular goalkeeper Uttam Barua, who however could not save his side from more misery. Meshu came in place of winger Shakil and played a cute one-two with Femi to advance into the box and send the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to make it 3-0 in the 65th minute. Brothers showed glimpse of a comeback and hit back in the 77th minute, courtesy of a spot kick converted by Brazilian Everton Souza. But that was the only moment for the Oranges to celebrate, and what followed afterwards was a goal fest. Packeer Ali sent on Emily in place of injured defender Wali to strengthen the attack and the national striker widened the margin by tapping a low cross from Abdul Baten Komol in the 84th minute while Femi found the back of the net two minutes from time with a harmless drive taken from outside from the box. Loga Bouga then sealed the match in the stoppage time with a header. TEAMS
