Nagar Natyadal, a Tangail-based theatre group, staged the play “Lalon Fakir” at Bhasani Hall in the town on Friday evening. The play has been written by Kalyan Mitra, while Utpal Chakroborty, a young dramatist and president of Nagar Natyadal, is the director. The cast comprised 28 members of the troupe, who convincingly enacted different characters and sought to give an authentic picture of the life and times of Lalon Fakir. Utpal, Pronoy Das Shovon and Anup Ghoshal played the roles of the old, young and child Lalon respectively. Prior to the show, a discussion was held. Leaders of Nagar Natyadal expressed their apprehensions about lack of opportunities and patronage to theatre in the district. However, they invoked the memory of the recently deceased local theatre personality Abdur Rahman Rakku and vowed to use culture as a tool to counter the prevailing adverse moral climate. Tangail Deputy Commissioner M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury addressed the discussion as chief guest. Local cultural personality Faruque Qureshi spoke as the special guest. With Tangail Nagar Natyadal Advisor Harun-ur-Rashid in the chair, the discussion was also attended by, among others, President of Tangail Theatre Papia Selim; general secretary of Tangail Natya Forum Zakir Hossain and its joint secretary Paltan Datta. Terming theatre as a tool for change, speakers at the discussion said that plays are reflection of lives and it is encouraging for the Tangail theatre activists that local people are now enjoying plays and are willing to spend on tickets. They appreciated the efforts of activists of the theatre group to stage a difficult play like “Lalon Fakir”.
