Is Khaleda Zia under house arrest?

Government must explain

THE presence of a huge number of police in front of Khaleda Zia's residence has given rise to suspicions in public mind whether she is under house arrest. However much the government may try to sugar-coat the incident, the opposition leader, to all appearances, seems to be confined in her house.
The government ministers are resorting to all kinds of subterfuge to explain away the glaring fact that she is being kept in confinement.
On the one hand, the government claims she's free, but on the other fetters appear to have been placed on her movement. The government should not take the public for fools that they can't see through the smokescreen surrounding her.
Never before, barring the time of the last caretaker government under emergency was any top leader of a party put under house arrest. The PM has set a bad precedent here.
The point we would like to drive home is placing such fetters on the movement of the leader of the opposition is not only undesirable, but also repugnant to sensibilities. This is totally unacceptable.
Clearly, she's not being able to move out of her house and there are also restrictions placed on access of party-colleagues to her house. Some of them trying to meet her have been barred, picked up and then released. We are left wondering as to what her exact status is. The government needs to clarify its position on the issue sooner rather than later.
