HC grants bail to bdnews24.com editor in chief
The High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Toufique Imrose Khalidi, editor-in-chief of online news portal bdnews24.com, for eight weeks in a corruption case.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Toufique seeking bail in the case.
Khalidi appeared before the HC bench during hearing on the bail petition today.
Mahbub Shafique, a lawyer for Khalidi, told The Daily Star the HC granted bail to his client considering their arguments that his client has not committed any corruption.
"We have placed documents before the High Court that bdnews24.com has 20,000 shares and each of those shares has been sold at Tk 12,000, the premium price. Relevant documents regarding shares have been submitted to the registration of joint companies," he added.
Anti-Corruption Commission decided to move an appeal before Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC order that granted bail to Toufique as there are specific allegations against him of depositing Tk 42 crore which have no legal source in different banks, said the ACC's lawyer, Khurshid Alam Khan.
Lawyers Abdul Matin Khasru and Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi also appeared for Khalidi during hearing.
The ACC on July 30 filed the case against Toufique for allegedly depositing Tk 42 crore which have no "legal sources" in different banks.
Gulshan Anwar Pradhan, deputy director of the anti-graft watchdog, filed the case at ACC's integrated district office in Dhaka, saying that the accused earned the money through illegal means by creating "fake documents".
