RMCH interns go on fresh 72-hr strike as RU authority files complaint
Intern doctors at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital announced a fresh strike today (October 22, 2022) aftert Rajshahi University authority filed a separate complaint agaisnt them and hospital staffers.
RU Registrar Prof Abdus Salam filed the complaint at Rajpara Police Station against unnamed intern doctors and hospital staffers, alleging that they were negligent to their duties and refrained from treating the injured RU student, leading to his death, reports our Rajshahi staff correspondent.
The complaint also read that some of the interns and hospital staffers attacked RU students with sticks and sharp surgical equipment, leaving a hundred injured. Of the injured, 10 students are still undergoing treatment at different hospitals of the city.
The police, however, was yet to record the complaint as a regular case.
Earlier on Thursday, Anwar Hossain, acting administrative officer of RMCH, filed a complaint against some 300 RU students for attacking intern doctors, staffers and vandalism. Police also did not record it as a case.
The RMCH interns started a 72-hour strike demanding three points including the arrest of attackers on doctors and vandalism over death of RU student MGM Shahriar.
Imran Hossain, conveynor of RMCH Intern doctors' council said their other two demands include finding out the cause of Shahriar's death and ensure safety of doctors in the hospital.
The strike was called from a protest rally held in front of the hospital from 1pm to 2pm today. After the demonstration, no intern doctor joined their duties.
The interns also announced protest programme in front of the hospital every day during the srike.
They also warned of more stringent action if the hospital authorities cannot ensure legal action and arrest of the attackers within the strike period.
RMCH governing body President and lawmaker Fazle Hossain Badsha, Principal of Rajshahi Medical College and BMA General Secretary Nawsher Ali, RMCH Director Brig Gen Dr Shamim Yazdani, President of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad and Head of Medicine Department Dr. Khalilur Rahman, joined the protest programme of the interns, among others.
MGM Shahriar, a fourth-year student of Rajshahi University's marketing department, died falling from the top floor of three-storey residential hall Wednesday night.
He was declared dead at RMCH and his fellow students vandalised RMCH raising allegation of negligence in treating Shahriar.
