PM hopes BSMMU to lead in medical research
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed hope that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) is playing a pioneering role in providing health services to people and hoped it would also lead in the country's medical research arena.
She said this in a message today on the eve of 'Research Day-2021' of BSMMU to be observed tomorrow.
The premier said the observance of the day is very time-befitting as it would encourage working researchers, physicians and all concerned as well as inspire other physicians of the country in providing treatment.
She said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had put special emphasis on medical research and healthcare services considering the matter of ensuring sound health of the countrymen with reforming the fundamental infrastructure of the newly independent war-ravaged Bangladesh.
Following the footprints of Bangabandhu, the Awami League government established medical university for the first time in 1998 aimed at laying the foundation for medical research to ensure sound health of people, she said.
This institution will conduct quality research and create modern outlook for establishing advanced health system for patients, she said.
Sheikh Hasina said since assuming power, the incumbent government has kept BSMMU and its research and educational activities under priority programme and took initiatives in line with that.
Without own research, it is very tough to establish longstanding and time-befitting healthcare services, she said.
She said the government has formulated pro-people health system for all. Number of beds has been increased at hospitals, general and specialized hospitals have been built and specialized healthcare has been increased manifold.
Healthcare services have been spread up to grassroots through community clinics and medical education system has been extended massively by establishing new medical colleges, she said adding that the importance of medical research has increased further.
She wished success of all programme marking the Research Day-2021 of BSMMU.
