15 children die of pneumonia at CHT hospitals in 2 weeks
Fifteen children died of pneumonia at hospitals in Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban in the last two weeks, said doctors.
In Khagrachhari, the deceased were aged between one month to two years old, said Dr Ripon Bappi, residential medical officer (RMO) of Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.
"Seven children died due to the disease (pneumonia) in the last 14 days," said Dr Bappi.
"Most of the deceased and those who have been hospitalised are from remote areas in the district," the physician added.
Confirming the development, Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital Child Specialist Dr Rajendro Tripura said, "There was also negligence of the duty doctors who could not take care of the patients properly," he said.
Dr Sanjida Afrin, medical officer of Khagrachhari's Dighinala Health Complex said, "Recently, a child -- around three months old -- with pneumonia was brought dead. The baby was from a remote area."
"Number of patients with cold and respiratory problems has been increasing at the health complex in recent times," the doctor said.
Meanwhile, Showkat Akbar Hossain, resident medical officer (RMO) of Rangamati Sadar Hospital, said, "Six children died of pneumonia and cold complications in Rangamati Sadar Hospital in the last two weeks."
Bandarban Sadar Hospital RMO Ziaul Haider said, "A two-month-old baby died of pneumonia at the hospital recently."
