India records over 1 lakh Covid-19 cases for 2nd consecutive day

India's daily increase in Omicron-driven Covid-19 cases crossed more than 1 lakh for the second successive day today.

According to the Indian Health Ministry update this morning, 1,41,986 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours with the daily positivity rate shooting up to 9.28%, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

Today's fresh cases number is 21% higher than yesterday, taking the overall Covid-19 tally of India to 3,53,68,372.

The last time India had reported more than one lakh Covid cases was on June 7 last year when 1,00,636 infections were recorded.

Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka account for most of the active Covid cases in India.

The tally of Omicron cases in the country rose to 3,071 today with the addition of fresh 64 patients. Maharashtra and Delhi are the top contributors with 876 and 513 cases, respectively.

India's Covid-19 vaccination coverage crossed the 150 crore (1,50,52,21,314) mark last.

The Covid vaccination drive began on January 16 last year.
