DoE fines Water Development Board Tk 10.6 lakh for damaging river

The Department of Environment (DoE) Chattogram region fined the Water Development Board for damaging Bakkhali River in Cox's Bazar through the unplanned lifting of sand from the river.

The fine was imposed after a hearing at the DoE office at Khulsi area of the port city yesterday.

Nazim Hossen Sheikh, assistant director of DoE (region), told The Daily Star that WDB hired a contracting firm to excavate Bakkhali River near S M Ghat.

He said WDB did not secure any prior approval from DoE, nor assessed the impact of the excavation operation on the river and the environment. They did not even select a place to store the excavated sand securely.

"The contracting firm excavated the river in an unplanned way and left the sand on arable land nearby, damaging the land and the river," he added.

The DoE fined WDB Tk 10.6 lakh, adding that eight other businesses including brick kilns, were fined Tk 2.45 lakh for violating DoE clearance conditions.
