Brick kiln in elephant sanctuary finally shut down after a decade
Department of Environment (DoE) today shut down a brick kiln -- built a decade ago, in an elephant sanctuary -- in Fasiakhali union of Chakaria upazila under Cox's Bazar.
The DoE, Chattogram (region) sprayed water to douse the fire of the kiln, suspending its operation, said Mofidul Alam, director of DoE, Chattogram told The Daily Star.
Locals said an Awami League leader named Gias Uddin built the brick kiln at the site, known as an elephant sanctuary, nearly 12 years ago.
It continued operation till 2022, defying court order issued in response to a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association.
