Trudging the gray areas of love, infidelity and vengeance with ‘Revenge’
Ziaul Hoque Polash's new directorial tele-fiction "Revenge", starring Afran Nisho, Tasnia Farin and Sayed Zaman Shawon, was released recently.
The production soon started trending on YouTube, taking the twelfth position and gradually making it to the fifth and finally securing the tag of number one on 'Trending' on the video sharing platform.
"Revenge" narrates a tale of love, passion, and betrayal, leading to revenge. Afran Nisho is seen as Jony, a young lover with temperamental issues. Nisho proves to be the best suit for the role, as drenches himself in Jony's vengeful attitude, dominating attributes, and inclination towards initiating trouble.
Through this production the audience comes across a loud and intense Nisho, but his dedication and selflessness in his love life wins over the viewers, leaving them feeing rather sympathetic towards Jony.
On the other hand, Tasnia Farin manages to completely take over with her simplicity and charm. While projecting Mitu's predicament, she also manages to cover her tracks, taking the audience completely by surprise when Mitu is revealed as being the antagonist.
"Mitu has her own dilemmas and at the end of the day, she just chooses her happiness," says Tasnia Farin who had previously worked in Polash's directorial venture "Surprise". "We never expect to see such a simple and down-to-earth girl ending up being infidel and that's where I found this role interesting."
Coming to the director's cut, the audience comes to discover a completely different side of Polash through "Revenge".
While the audience is used to seeing him flaunting the comic character of Kaabila, this production presents him as a rather serious and thoughtful persona, which is in complete contrast to his acting essence.
"Acting is more linked to my appearance while direction defines my existence,' shares Polash who had previously directed "Ghore Fhera", and "Ektu Khani", among others. "Rather than YouTube views, I look to change the views of my audience through my directorial ventures."
The story, conceptualised by Sahadat Russell tends to follow an expected flow, until events turn during the climax, showcasing the unexpected.
"I had shared the story with Polash and we had a lengthy discussion" shares Sahadat Russell. "I loved his improvisation and thus, we were finally able pull off this production after much a redo."
An amazing original track "Ke Tomake Bashbe Bhalo" by band Adverb, paired with the background score by Syed Nafis reinforces the mood and themes put forward by the production, defining the struggles of Jony, modestly.
Shawon manages to keep up with his role alongside the dominating and loudmouth character of Jony. However, Nisho steals the show with his overpowering performance, while Farin fares well with the realistic projection of inner conflict that Mitu experiences.
The audience will also find the colour grading, done by Ismail Hossain, tasteful and fitting throughout the project. Working perfectly in harmony with Nazmul Hasan (DOP), the camera positions, the mood and light play during shots work in an almost perfect alignment the inner state of the characters.
'Revenge' is a worthwhile watch, especially considering Ziaul Hoque Polash, even though a seasoned actor at this point, is relatively new to direction. Even though not perfect, it shows promise for both the director and the young musical team that the project employs.
