Meril Prothom-Alo Awards 2024: Biggest winners in the marquee event

Rife with glamour and applause, the 26th Meril-Prothom Alo Awards were held this evening, at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Agargaon. Celebrating the year's finest in film, television, and OTT, the event brought together a dazzling array of stars and honoured the artistic achievements that aided in defining the spirit of Bangladeshi culture this past year.
The programme began at 6pm with a red-carpet reception that welcomed iconic names such as Afzal Hossain, Dilara Zaman, Bidya Sinha Mim, Tasnia Farin, and Mehazabien Chowdhury, alongside a vibrant gathering of actors, directors, and cultural personalities. Making their debut as hosts for the event were Afran Nisho and Tasnia Farin, who helmed the ceremony with charm and poise.
The opening performance—a group dance by Mondera Chakroborty, Ridy Sheikh, and Tama Mirza—set the tone for an evening of elegance and celebration. The programme officially began with a welcome speech by Anisul Hoque, managing editor of Prothom Alo, followed by remarks from Malik Mohammed Sayeed, CEO of Square Toiletries Ltd., the event's long-standing partner.
A highlight of the night was the Lifetime Achievement Award presented to veteran actor Abul Hayat. A moving documentary paid tribute to his decades-spanning career. Actress Dilara Zaman presented the award, while Anjan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Toiletries Ltd, honoured him with an embroidered shawl. In a heartfelt moment, Hayat dedicated the award to his wife, Shirin Hayat, and expressed gratitude to his family and colleagues, underscoring the collective nature of his success.
As the awards continued, the web series "Rongila Kitab" clinched the Critics' Choice for Best Web Series, while Salzar Rahman was named Best Screenwriter for "Kalpurush". Director Nuhash Humayun won Best Director for his web series "Dui Shaw".
Mosharraf Karim was recognised as Best Actor in the web series category for "Adhunik Bangla Hotel", with Zinnat Ara taking Best Actress for "Sinpaat".
In the limited-length fiction segment, Jahid Preetom won Best Director for "Buk Pocket-er Golpo", while Subrata Sanjib won Best Screenplay for "Rod Brishtir Golpo". Tasnia Farin triumphed as Best Actress for "Porspor", and Khairul Basar took Best Actor for his performances in "Porspor" and "Rod Brishtir Golpo" in the same category.
The evening reached its peak with "Priyo Maloti" winning three major accolades. Besides the film being crowned as Best Feature Film, its director, Shangkha Dasgupta, was honoured as Best Director, and Mehazabien Chowdhury took the honour as Best Actress for the same film in this category. The Best Actor in the same category was taken by Mamnun Hasan Emon for his performance in "Maya".
One of the standout moments of the evening was a special documentary presentation celebrating 25 years of Shakib Khan in the world of cinema. Titled "Megastar Shakib Khan", the documentary took the audience on a nostalgic journey through the actor's illustrious career. Featuring clips from his iconic films, memorable songs, and signature dialogues, the film paid tribute to a star who has continuously broken his own barriers, challenging himself with every role and bringing something new to his audience year after year in elevating the Bangladeshi film industry.
A special honour was bestowed upon Shakib Khan in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the film industry.
For the television category, Tawsif Mahbub and Tanjim Saiyara Totini took home the Best Actor and Actress awards, respectively, for their performance in the fiction "Love Sub".
In the music category, Pritom Hasan was named Best Male Playback Singer for his energetic track "Laage Ura Dhura" from the film "Toofan". The Best Female Playback Singer award went to Dilshad Nahar Kona for her popular song "Dushtu Kokil" from the same film.
Farrukh Ahmed Rehan won the award for Best Newcomer for his role in "Jugal".
